The position of Transportation Manager will be responsible for strategic and tactical transportation and freight operations to support Palermo’s Supply Chain needs. This position is responsible for being the shipper of choice with asset-based carriers and improving service for customers while minimizing costs. The Transportation Manager will own developing and leading the strategy around transportation partners, performance metrics, benchmarking, freight payment and customer score-carding (internal and external), and activity-based opportunity analysis; all while collaborating cross functional with Sales and other Supply Chain functions.


Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Enforce compliance to (and establish where needed) SOP’s in the areas of transportation planning, freight rate obtainment, fuel charge, lumper usage, capacity planning, freight payment, freight claims, safety, employee engagement and other process areas.
  • Manage freight bidding process; both customer specific and spot needs; rate evaluation, manipulation and presentation.
  • Perform P&L management, budgeting and forecasting for transportation.
  • Support Business Development, solution design and pricing/rate development and negotiations (RFQ, RFI, Proposal Response).
  • Utilize data, analysis, continuous improvement tools and reporting of transportation metrics to drive continual process improvement and cost reduction.
  • Meet or exceed operation standards for safety, quality, productivity, cost, delivery, customer satisfaction, financial and various other KPI’s.
  • Develop and present supplier scorecards.
  • Maintain healthy business relationships through day to day communication and issue resolution.
  • Evaluate Transportation Management Systems and execute implementation.
  • Support a 24/7 production environment; off-hour and weekend support for Customer Service, Carriers and Operations as required.
  • Manage transportation support staff as required, assess performance of employees and successfully manage team to achieve goals through effective conflict resolution, by promoting teamwork, and the use of performance management tools.
  • Conduct monthly communications meeting regarding expectations, performance metrics and strategic direction.
  • Communicate transportation issues to senior management and recommend changes.
  • Support company strategic projects as requested.


Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Prior Consumer Packaged Goods transportation experience.
  • Experience with refrigerated transportation.
  • Must be proficient with ERP System Experience; MS NAVision is a plus.
  • Must be proficient with Transportation software implementation and usage.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and meet specific goals and deadlines.
  • Must have very strong customer service skills.
  • Must possess strong analytical abilities, organizational skills, and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate with tact, diplomacy, and authority, when necessary.
  • Detailed knowledge of financial planning, P&L analysis, and margin improvement.
  • Ability to motivate, train, lead, and evaluate the performance of subordinates.
  • Ability to develop and present information professionally to internal and external management/customers.
  • Proficient in navigating third party payment portals, carrier, broker, warehouse and customer portals/websites.
  • Highly proficient in the use of MS Office – Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, & Word.

Education & Experience:

  • College Graduate, Supply Chain or Business discipline expected.
  • MBA degree preferred.
  • 10+ years’ experience in Transportation, pricing minimum of 3 years with refrigerated.
